How to Pack the Perfect Suitcase for Your Autumn Trip to England

packing for england

Our time in England was divided into two distinct locations, environments, and types of activities: sightseeing and nice restaurants and bars in London, and hiking and laid-back pub life in the Lake District. I decided on a few dressier pieces that would work well in London (as usual, opting for versatile cuts and neutral colors that could be mixed and matched) plus some of my favorite basic casual travel pieces from Athleta, perfect for hiking and bundling up in the cooler temperatures of the north.

What I packed in my carry-on suitcase
As usual, I stuffed my Away Carry-On to the brim – it hasn’t failed me yet!

Tops
Short sleeve v-neck tee
époque évolution mock neck top
Long sleeve henley top
Long sleeve v-neck tee
Athleta Speedlight short sleeve top
Athleta Speedlight long sleeve top

Bottoms
ADAY Turn It Up pants
Athleta Headlands hybrid trek tights
Athleta hybrid tights

As you can tell, I love Athleta for travel gear. Their clothes are comfortable, versatile, good quality, and on-trend. They’re also really easy to mix and match. Click here for 20% off your first Athleta item.

Essentials
Lunya pajamas
Six pairs of ExOfficio bikinis
Two True&Co. True Body bras
One pair of SmartWool Hike Light crew socks
One pair of crew liner socks

I use Gekks in my Rothy’s so the only socks I need to travel with these days are for hiking.

Outerwear
J.Crew sweater coat (easy way to add a tailored look to an outfit)
North Face fleece
Patagonia Micro Puff Hoody
Patagonia Lash Point waterproof parka (waterproof enough to stay dry, nice enough for London)

Shoes
Rothy’s sneakers
Rothy’s flats
Merrell Moab waterproof hiking boots

Rothy’s are incredible for travel; they’re comfortable, don’t take up much space, and you can machine wash them – click here for $20 off your first purchase.

Gear
Toiletries bag
REI Flash 18 backpack (perfect for travel, packs almost flat)
Water bladder (we had some decent four- to five-hour hikes planned)
Rain cover for backpack, small First Aid kit, and a few Ziploc bags
Universal travel adapter
Copy of passport

All our accommodations this trip included laundry facilities so I didn’t pack our normal travel laundry kit.

On the plane, I wore the short sleeve v-neck tee, Athleta hybrid tights, J.Crew sweater coat, and Rothy’s sneakers.

What I packed in my personal item
My new KNOMO Beauchamp backpack was the perfect size for a personal item; large enough to hold the essentials while still being small enough to double as a chic day backpack for London.

Passport and other travel IDs (Global Entry, etc.)
Angela Roi cross-body bag
Dagne Dover travel wallet
Sunglasses

Patagonia Houdini jacket (packs up tiny but perfect to throw on for a surprise rain shower)
Printed trip itinerary w/ accommodation and reservation details
iPad
Bose noise-canceling headphones (worth every penny)
Sony Alpha a7ii camera with Sony 35mm f1.8 lens
Tech pouch containing all needed chargers and back-up batteries
Water bottle
Carry-on essentials bag (this contains my must-haves for plane travel, including toiletries for freshening up and staying germ-free: face wipes, toothbrush and toothpaste, tissues, mints, antibacterial wipes, etc.)

If I can pack for fancy restaurants, swanky afternoon tea, football matches, and rainy, muddy hiking conditions in just a carry-on, you can too!
